Education TopicsHeart attacks or Acute Myocardial Infarctions (AMI) occur because of buildup of cholesterol in the wall of the arteries supplying the heart muscle. If blood to the heart muscle is insufficient then a heart attack will occur and the heart muscle will become scarred. There are many reasons why arteries become blocked with cholesterol and identifying and managing these risks are very important to prevent either a first or subsequent heart attack and stroke.
Atrial Fibrillation is a very common condition affecting 5% of the general population at some point with incidence increasing with age. AF can be asymptomatic in some people, through to debilitating in others. Whilst AF is not usually a dangerous rhythm there is an increased risk of stroke which needs to be properly managed.
